How to
Build a Garage From the Ground Up
By Jeff Glasser
Planning out what you want to do is the first step to
building a custom garage. Before you get started, it is
a good idea to have a well designed plan, as there are
many components needed to build a garage. Even before
you start your plan make sure to take accurate
measurements. In addition, make sure to determine the
total cost to build a garage and have all your materials
ahead of time, so you do not run into any interruptions
once the building starts.
Build A Garage With A Step By Step Plan
The first thing you need to consider is where and how
big your garage will be. Important in this decision is
how big the door is. I would start your design here as
it is much easier to build a garage around the door
rather than try to fit a door into a custom design later
on. There are a number of high quality garage door
retailers around, so find one in your area and take a
look at what they have to offer.
By starting with the door, your custom garage design
should come together much easier than if you started
with the overall garage. For the door you need to know
the width and height you want. This should be based on
your cars. Once you have that you probably are going to
want to add at least a foot on either side for side
room. At least another foot on top for headroom, than at
least 18 inches past the height of the door to
accommodate it. Once you have those numbers you have
your basic outline for how to build a garage.
Are you ready to start getting into your custom built
garage, now that all the measurements are done? Choosing
the cabinetry, wall hangs and flooring are your next
steps. This is the fun stuff. Because each of those
items have their own qualities and features, make sure
you research before you purchase. Wood has a propensity
to rot, so I recommend choosing as much metal as
possible.
An important part of deciding how to build a garage are
the colors and other options for the floor, doors and
walls. You have several options, but I suggest finding a
theme and sticking to it. A popular theme these days is
modeling your garage after your favorite sports or race
team. This gives a you a great color scheme to work with
as well as focusing your design
